Presenter

National Board Certified high school English teacher and Regional Teacher of the Year from eastern Washington, Stephanie King will provide insight into her own experiences teaching and how she developed opportunities for her students to advance their education. From being the first to bring college in the high school to her building, to creating curriculum based on migrant farm workers that was implemented in districts across the state, to developing materials for the University of Washington English department specifically addressing racial equality, Stephanie has been a constant voice for change for her students.

Ms. Janelle Pfaller
German Teacher Grades 6-8
Milwaukee German Immersion School, WI

Presenter

Janelle Pfaller has a Bachelor of Science in Education from the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh and a Masters of Education in Urban Education from Mount Mary College. Her passion for World Language Education strengthened after undergrad when she worked in Austria for two years as a teaching assistant through the Austrian American Fulbright Commission. Her passion, dedication, and drive provide students at Milwaukee School of Languages a German immersion education in order to develop a global mindset, valuable social skills, cultural empathy, and unique opportunities. Pfaller is the World Language Department Chair and has several local and international partnerships and programs to accelerate student learning including the Central Agencies for Schools Abroad (ZFA) which is part of the Federal Office of Administration in Germany. In 2020, she was a recipient of the Herb Kohl Teacher Fellowship Award and the Wisconsin Association of Bilingual Education (WIABE) Educator of the Year Award.

Georgia Academy for the Blind

Presenter

Kristen Applebee is the National 2019 Outstanding Teacher of Students who are Blind or Visually Impaired, and a 2020 Finalist for Georgia Teacher of the year. She is in her 9th year as Art Teacher to K-12 students at Georgia Academy for the Blind. She earned a BFA from Brigham Young University, an MFA from Ohio State, an Early Childhood Educators Certificate from Wesleyan College, and a TVI from Middle Georgia RESA.

Mrs. Susan Richardson
Third Grade Teacher Milwaukee German Immersion School, WI

Presenter

Susan Richardson (NBCT) fell in love with languages during her undergraduate studies at Carthage College in Kenosha. After living and teaching ESL/EFL in Germany for 8 years, she received her MA in German Language and Linguistics from UW Milwaukee while teaching at the UWM-School of Continuing Education. Richardson employs language learning strategies while immersing her students in various cultures in her current third-grade classroom at Milwaukee German Immersion School. Passionate about teaching the whole child, Richardson coordinates an Art Club and champions her school’s transition to a green playground. Through her role as Wisconsin 2021 Teacher of Year, she promotes the cognitive and social benefits of language acquisition and its connection to cultural responsiveness. Richardson is currently pursuing her Doctorate in Education with an emphasis on teaching future educators.

Mrs. Jennie Bryan
Brunswick County Schools 9-12 Social Studies Lead Teacher
South Brunswick HS, NC

Presenter

Jennie Bryan is a 12th year 9-12 Social Studies educator. She graduated from UNC Chapel Hill in 2007 with a BA in History and received her MA in Education from Wake Forest University in 2009. During her time in the classroom she has taught a variety of social studies courses, serving students in both Pitt and Brunswick Counties . She is currently enjoying teaching AP US History at South Brunswick High School in Southport, NC. She is also serving as the 9-12 Social Studies Lead Teacher for Brunswick County Schools. Jennie enjoys engaging in leadership beyond the classroom in roles such as serving on the School Improvement Team, facilitating the Brunswick County Schools Teacher Advisory Council, and presenting at the North Carolina Social Studies Conference. In 2020, she was named the Brunswick County Schools Teacher of the Year and subsequently named the 2021 Burroughs Wellcome Fund Southeast Regional Teacher of the Year.
