How Art Helps Students Become Better Global Citizens

Presented by: Kristen Applebee, K-12 Art Teacher at Georgia Academy for the Blind

​

​This session will provide real examples of how Art can be used to explore and appreciate different perspectives and cultures. Art creates awareness and is a vehicle for learning responsibility, creativity and problem solving skills.

We Are Global Citizens: Advocating for Youth in Poverty

Presented by: Stephanie King, ELA Teacher, grades 9-12 at Granger High School

​

The session will focus on what educators can do to advocate for their students when they come from a disadvantaged or underrepresented background and how educators can connect this advocacy to our role in the educational system and global society. Ms. King will share her experiences as a high school teacher and varsity soccer coach in rural Washington, where over 90% of the students in her building come from low-income families.

How Can Local Communities Solve Global Problems?

Presented by: Jennie Bryan, Brunswick County Schools 9-12 Social Studies Lead Teacher

​

In this session, participants will take on the role as students in a 6-12 classroom conducting a historical inquiry about how local communities work to solve global problems. This session will support 6-12 pre-service and beginning teachers in the understanding of the inquiry indicators that are part of the new K-12 NC Social Studies Standards.

World Languages Open the Door to Becoming a Global Citizen

Presented by: Susan Richardson, Third Grade Teacher, Milwaukee German  Immersion School

Janelle Pfaller, German Teacher Grades 6-8 Milwaukee  German Immersion School
 

Presenters will share examples for their German Immersion teaching context how students become global citizens through learning another language and culture. Examples include geography lessons, food and cooking and holidays and cultural events.
